Māori Data Sovereignty & Our Commitment to Te Arawa

Te Arawa Marae Resilience Programme

He Kaitiaki Tātou — We are Guardians. In Te Arawa, we understand that knowledge is a taonga—a treasure passed down through generations. The information shared within the Te Arawa Resilience Programme—our whānau emergency plans, our marae contact lists, and our collective resilience strategies—is an extension of our identity as Te Arawa. Protecting this knowledge is not just a technical requirement; it is a profound responsibility of kaitiakitanga.

He Kete Mōhiotanga — Your Digital Kete

We have built this platform on the principle that whānau is the master of their own data. Our system uses a "Zero-Knowledge" architecture — meaning we cannot read your information, even if we wanted to.

Encrypted on Your Device

When you input your emergency plan, it is encrypted on your own device before it ever leaves your home. Only you hold the key — your PIN.

Secure Cloud Storage

Encrypted data is stored in a high-security facility in Sydney, Australia — ensuring your plan remains accessible even during a local disaster.

Future Sovereign Home

Our architecture is built for full data portability — ready to be moved to an Aotearoa-based, Te Arawa-aligned digital home as soon as a mature solution is available.

Whakamāoritia — In plain language: Think of the server in Sydney like borrowing a secure storage shed off-shore for our documents. But we have put our papers in an unbreakable, custom-made box that only we can open. We are doing this because we need to keep our whānau safe right now — but the box is ours, and we will move it home to Te Arawa soil the moment we have the right place to put it.

Ō Mātou Oati — Our Pledge to Te Arawa

We recognize that the technology we use today is only a bridge. We are committed to transparency and to the ongoing pursuit of digital self-determination for our iwi.

  • Whānau data will never be sold or used for unrelated purposes.
  • Marae-specific information remains under the mana of the relevant marae.
  • Sensitive marae resilience information is accessible to approved representatives only.
  • Whānau hold the only key to their own emergency plans — not even our administrators can read them.
  • Any reporting will use aggregated information wherever possible, never individual personal details.
  • Data access will be guided by tikanga, kaupapa Māori values, and Te Mana Raraunga principles.
  • We will actively seek an Aotearoa-based digital infrastructure solution as the technology matures.
